Social media marketing is one of the most trending ways to market your business right now. But is social media marketing important?
Well, that’s exactly what I’m going to break down in this article. And even though you might not be using social media right now or you’re already a skilled elite…
This is still something you want to read. So, let’s begin…
Is Social Media Marketing Important?
The short answer to this question is – YES. But let’s break it down before you start to believe this conclusion.
Social media has begun to prove as an important marketing channel for all businesses with the rise of Facebook. It allowed businesses to engage with their customers on a deeper level, build relationships, and in the end, get more customers.
And the social media marketing trend didn’t end. New platforms started to come out after Facebook’s rise, and that only poured gasoline to the fire.
As of October 2021, 4.55 billion people were active on social media.
That’s over half of the world’s population! In other words, if your dream customers are not on social media, they probably don’t exist.
But the thing that is the most attractive for business owners (especially startups) is that there is no cost associated with it.
New customers can discover your business through social media, and you don’t have to spend a penny on it. And beyond that, if you know what you’re doing you can reach literally MILLIONS of your dream customers, and there are businesses that have raised hundreds of millions of dollars using it. One of them is, for example, Cardone Capital.
So, besides using it as a tool to attract new customers, you can also use it to close business deals and scale your company.
And the benefits are endless. You can use it to follow up with customers that have already bought to buy again. You can even use it as a payment gate for your company and sell your products and services DIRECTLY through it, without even having a website. (e.g. Facebook lets you do that.)
Or as a side benefit of social media marketing, you can use the authority you built to attract new employees to your business. You can use it for customer service…
And on and on. The benefits of social media marketing are endless.
So, is social media marketing important? YES. There’s no doubt about it.
And if you’re already convinced that it is the future of marketing for your own business, then here’s how to start with social media marketing effectively and get new customers online…
How To Start With Social Media Marketing
I thought I am going to keep it simple and create an infographic that’s going to break down the basic steps for you, but of course, below it, we’re going to go more deeply into this topic…
So, what are the 4 basic steps that you need to take to successfully start doing social media marketing for your business?
Pick ONE Social Media Platform
You’re going to hear from all sides that you should be on ALL social media platforms. And it’s the truth! But it all depends on whether or not you are able to handle it.
Of course, after some time you want to hire people to do the social media marketing for you (at least the boring and hardest part), and then you can be on all platforms.
But if you are a small business owner, and you’re doing a lot of things by yourself, chances are that you won’t be able to post 3X a day on 6 platforms without lowering the quality of your content and losing reach and sales.
You just can’t handle it alone.
However, the MAIN point of why you should start with just one social media platform is to understand the nature of the platform, master it, and maximize the results you get there.
After you do that, you can move on to the next one, master it, and max out the results again. (Again, if you have a team of marketers, you can just conquer them all at once.)
From my experience, the best platform to start with is Instagram. But it highly depends on your brand, so choose where to do social media marketing based on that.
Find Out Where They’re Congregating
Once you know which platform you are going to get on, the second thing that you want to do is to build your dream customer (if you don’t already have one – and you should), and then find out where your dream customers are congregating.
The basic two places that are on the majority of social media platforms are:
- Influencers (they follow them)
- Hashtags (They follow them, or regularly check them)
However, each platform has its unique features and places where they can gather as well. That’s why it is so important that you understand the platform, and find these places as well.
Once you know them, you will want to get in front of your dream customers in those places by doing things like collaborations, using hashtags on your posts, and more.
Create A Content Strategy
The next extremely important part of social media marketing is having a content strategy. No matter the platform that you are on, your content is 80% of the results that you’ll get.
Here is an evergreen content strategy that you can use on any platform:
- Attraction Content (e.g. industry trends, trending features like Instagram reels, quick tips, etc.) – this will be 40% of all the content that you are going to post.
- Nurturing Content (i.e. content that builds trust and bond. This can be behind-the-scenes posts, personal stories, and other things that make you relatable.) – this will be 40% of your content.
- Conversion Content (i.e. content that is meant to generate sales. Mainly promotional posts.) this will be 20% of what you will post.
Again, throughout your journey and testing you will discover what works the best, some best practices for each and every post, video, etc., and many other things.

But now, let’s move on to the fourth thing that is important for your social media marketing.
Engage With Your Audience
The “last” but not least part of successfully starting doing social media marketing for your business is engaging with your audience.
This can be replying to their messages and comments, creating polls, making them participate in the evolvement of your brand, and other stuff.
In other words, you must show that you care about them, and consistently build relationships.
